Jenny's Jots August 2023 Wow, have we raced to a great start for our 2023-2024 Boerne Blaze sports year! Busier than ever and so many opportunities for our athletes! Swimming is in full swing! Our lane swimmers practice twice per week and the developmental swimmers are on Tuesdays. Unfortunately, we have just about run out of room in the pool we use. Bowling begins on Mondays on August 7. Even though we will be providing 2 separate sessions for the bowlers, we will be crowded there as well! Many have expressed interest in joining in for the bowling season!! ... (Read More) Though it was extremely hot, we had a good turn-out at our disc golf clinic on Sunday, July 16 in the evening. We had as many volunteers as athletes so were able to pair them up perfectly! Jeff’s uncle Dan Olsen, Advanced Amateur Master, led the clinic. Once the weather cools off a little (actually a lot!), we will be planning some practices! Stay tuned. SOTX (Special Olympics Texas) organized a fundraiser with Orange Theory Fitness. On Saturday, July 22 (at 6:30 am!), the local fitness club held a class and invited one of our athletes to join them. Jeff is an early riser and game to try any sport! He participated in this 90-minute class, doing a great job and never giving up! Thanks for your enthusiasm, Jeff! But surprise! Another athlete was there since his parents belong to the club and take the class. Thanks, Ethan! You are awesome! A few of our volunteers and coaches attended a Pickleball demonstration class in San Antonio. Chicken n Pickle is now offering practices on Wednesdays at noon (indoor courts) free of charge for area 20 teams. Thanks Coach Christy and Volunteer Steve! Let’s see what we can do with this new sport! And…. on July 27, SOTX held a state-wide fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse restaurants. Known as “Tip a Cop,” local police officers and SO athletes pair up and visit customers on this night once per year and explain about Special Olympics and ask for donations. We had several BBSO athletes participate: Liv, Christopher, Tricia, Rebecca, and Adam. Also, several coaches, volunteers, and parents supported this effort. So, a big shout-out to all who represented our team so well! And don’t forget to eat at Blacksmith Grill on Main Street in Boerne on Wednesday, August 2! They will be open 11:00-3:00. Tell them you are there to support Boerne Blaze and they will donate 10% of your total bill to our team!! We support each other: Boerne Blaze + Blacksmith Grill!!!
