Mission and Vision

We provide local special athletes a safe and supportive environment to enhance their physical and social skills through sports and community awareness.

Boerne Blaze (20.BOE) represents the local delegation of Boerne for Special Olympics Texas - San Antonio area (Area 20).

Population Served

We serve people in the community of Boerne and surrounding areas who have cognitive disabilities (ages 6 and up). At present, we have about 50 athletes on our active roster who participate in at least one sport per year.

Organization Structure

BBSO is completely run by volunteerism and financial donations. We are dependent on the generous donations of time and effort by our coaches and could not begin to offer the great program we have without all the many student and adult volunteers.
We work out of our homes and use sports-specific facility rentals for each of our sports. We are a single delegation under area 20 Special Olympics, under SOTX (Special Olympics Texas) and as such follow all of their rules and guidelines. All of our coaches are trained by SOTX and there is a significant amount of entry paperwork required of all volunteers as well. Each Special Olympics area and state provide those competitions in various venues.

Volunteer

Many of our coaches are parents of our athletes. But we also welcome those who just have a heart for our special population to volunteer as well. Everyone freely gives of their time with generous and compassionate hearts. Our athletes LOVE playing and practicing with the young volunteers we have. They identify with them on a different level. And the importance of high school volunteers is huge in so many ways. In particular, they help our athletes feel accepted and loved, but the volunteers are role models for our athletes and can often help our special people grow and improve in ways that we, as parents, cannot.

Special Olympics Volunteer Oath

I promise to give the time in my life so that Special Olympic athletes can have the time of their lives.
I promise to support Special Olympics not just as an expression of charity, but as a form of respect for my fellow human beings.
I promise to spread the word of volunteerism because, in giving, I receive so much more in return.
