August 2026
Our new sports year has begun with a splash! Swimming is underway with about 40 athletes! Lane swimmers work very hard on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour each, ending every practice with a fun relay. Progress of all athletes is obvious and athletes are proud, as well as the coaches! Developmental swimmers come on Wednesdays for 45 minutes and are learning the basics in a group setting. Everyone is excited to be back in the water!!
A small regional aquathon took place in Spicewood (Austin area) on July 19. Athlete Adam and unified partner Sylvia represented Boerne Blaze. Adam swam 400 meters and Sylvia ran ½ mile, bringing home a gold medal and clocking in at least 2 minutes faster than their predicted time. Most of all, it was fun and we met some other great athletes, families and coaches!
Pickleball begins August 17 and will be practicing weekly at St. Mark Presbyterian Church gym. Head Coach is Christy Cotton, with 42 athletes signed up!
To keep all these sports running smoothly, there needs to be an organized head coach and several assistant coaches who are dedicated to their sport. In addition, we rely on many volunteers and volunteer organizations. Boerne Blaze is generously supported with volunteers from YMSL (Young Mens’ Service League) and NCL (National Charity League). These are both national philanthropic groups with local chapters. They include high school boys (YMSL) or girls (NCL) and their moms who sign up for practices to help volunteer in any way needed.
The above groups are a great help, but we also have individuals not connected to a particular group. Under the “Volunteer” tab of this website, some of our more recent volunteers are highlighted. These are those who have been honored at our annual banquet.
I would now like to recognize one high school volunteer who has been with us for many years and is now a very consistent volunteer, unified partner, and assistant coach in most every sport we have – CJ Fisk. Even though he is very busy with school activities, he always makes time for Boerne Blaze. He is a leader and role model for our athletes.
Boerne Blaze is completely run with volunteerism and we love our volunteers! If you are interested in signing up with us, please contact me (Jenny Cashion) at jappacash@yahoo.com! We will welcome you with open arms!
