10 Sports — Something for Everyone

Boerne Blaze currently offers 10 sports at various times throughout the year typically scheduled to coincide with Special Olympics Texas Area 20 competitions. Practices for each sport are generally in the afternoons after school and held 1-2 times per week for at least 8 weeks prior to competition. Exceptions include tennis which holds Sunday practices and kickball which is help on Saturdays. Some sports overlap in duration. At the end of each sport, we have some kind of local celebratory event. We also participate in an area competition in most of the sports and selected state competitions.

Our goals for the athletes who participate in practices and competitions are: learning the rules of the sport; learning teamwork; practicing sportsmanship; developing physical fitness and conditioning; demonstrating courage; sharing and communicating with teammates, coaches, and volunteers; and experiencing joy, inclusion, and acceptance.

Basketball

Practices: December - January; Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:15-6 p.m.; Herff Elementary School

Big Game: early February; Boerne Champion HS gym

This is one of our most popular sports. We work on conditioning, dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and sharing the ball, and then we run scrimmages to practice those skills in a game situation.

Area Competition: Saturday in early December; Bandera Bowling Center

A very popular sport held in a historic Boerne venue. We run two shifts because of the number of bowlers and limited number of lanes, plus many athletes are coming from school. Bowlers improve their skills, teamwork, and following directions from coaches.

This sport involves 3 different types of discs thrown toward an upright basket. Different discs are used according to the distance to the goal. The athlete’s score is the number of throws to land the disc in the basket. Athletes learn: how to successfully choose and throw a disc, how to score, and course etiquette.
