Boerne Blaze Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

BBSO serves a segment of the Boerne community that often goes overlooked, especially after they leave the Boerne ISD school system at age 22. We do so with joy and love, as a 100% volunteer-run organization supported entirely by community donations. For many BBSO athletes, this is the highlight of their week and an opportunity to spend time with their friends and improve their skills.

Boerne Blaze Special Olympics was honored in 2026 as the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit of the Year for 2025. In 2023, Rebecca Stone was selected as the SOTX Most Inspirational Athlete and Boerne Blaze was chosen to be Grand Marshal of Boerne’s hugely popular Weihnachts Parade.

100% Volunteer-run and Community Supported

BBSO is completely run by volunteerism and financial donations. We are dependent on the generous donations of time and effort by our coaches and could not begin to offer the great program we have without all the many student and adult volunteers. 

We have grown from 30 athletes (10% post-school) in 2007 to more than 85 (52% post-school) in 2026, and we are continuing to add new athletes as more families move into the Boerne area. We also have grown from 3 coaches in 2007 to more than 20 coaches and assistant coaches in 2026.

We work out of our homes and use sports-specific facility rentals for each of our sports. We are a single delegation under Area 20 of Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) and as such follow all of their rules and guidelines. All of our coaches are trained by SOTX and there is a significant amount of entry paperwork required of all volunteers as well.
