Sherri Cox

Head Coach: Swimming, Kayaking

Special Olympics Experience: I started volunteering for the Special Olympics in 2002 and then became a Coach in 2016.

Background: BS degree in Biology and Physical Education from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.  MS degree in Motor Behavior and Exercise Science from University of Houston.  Additional certification of Diagnostician from Texas A&M University Kingsville.

While in College and just after graduation, I taught beginner swimming to both school age students as well as College Students.  I also Lifeguarded at both a private country club and at the University.

My professional career included teaching in the classroom for 15 years.  These years included teaching Physical Science, Biology and Elementary Physical Education.  I also coached the High School Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving Teams at Gregory Portland High School from 1985-88.  During those years, I also served as the stroke coach for a private swim club in Houston, taught Lifeguarding courses through the American Red Cross, and continued teaching private swim lessons.   The last 15 years of my professional career I worked as a Diagnostician.  During this time, I began teaching private swim to individuals with disabilities, Wounded Warriors and Adult Learn to Swim at the Health and Wellness Center pool in Boerne.

Why I Love Coaching Special Olympics: I have found my "home".  I retired in 2016 and took on the most important role in my life.  I've been able to use all of the skills that I acquired in my professional career and have never felt more accomplished.  These Athletes are amazing and truly define what courage, hardwork and dedication to their sport and team is all about.  I am blessed!
