Swimming is usually held beginning in July and runs through our area meet in San Antonio the first part of September. At present, we practice at the Omega Center 16 yard indoor pool off Highland Road in Boerne. Most athletes of varying abilities qualify. Athletes must have bowel and bladder control and be able to follow safety protocols. Developmental swimmers (those who are not ready to swim laps and need more individual instruction) usually practice one day per week (45 minutes). These swimmers work on safety in the water, being comfortable in the pool, putting head in the water, getting to the side, etc. Various equipment is used to be successful. Being able to take instruction is paramount. A certified coach and volunteers assist in the water. Lap swimmers practice twice weekly for an hour plus each session. These athletes must be able to swim the length of the pool independently. Practices emphasize endurance, stroke development, use of various equipment to improve strength and technique, and efficiency in the water. Swimmers need to be able to work with various coaches and volunteers, take instruction and correction. Although not required, all swimmers who are at least 8 years of age are eligible to compete in the area meet in September. Swimmers who meet qualification standards may be invited to participate at the state level. The state meet is at Texas A&M in early October and is a multiple day event. Boerne Blaze swim coaches make all decisions regarding the state team.
