It was the spring of 1988 when my son, age 7, began participating in Special Olympics in the sport of Track and Field. He loved to run like Forrest Gump! That day I began my volunteering with Special Olympics and have continued volunteering for the past 35 years!
Since that day I have volunteered in the following areas: Track & Field, Bowling, Volleyball, Tennis Skills, Basketball, Aquatics, Kayaking, Triathlon, and Cycling. I’ve coached swimming and kayaking. My son and I have attended and participated in local meets, area meets, and state meets. I’ve washed and cared for team uniforms, assisted at banquets, worked on fundraisers, and helped in any way I could.
This year I’m retiring from coaching, but not from volunteering with Boerne Blaze Special Olympics as I will enjoy helping whenever possible. Maybe I’ll be able to participate in Unified Sports as a partner athlete!
