Lots of Boerne Blaze athletes participate in our cycling program! We generally begin the season in February or early March. We practice outside on a Boerne ISD elementary track. Practices are usually two times per week.
If an athlete has his or her personal bike, they are encouraged to use it. Otherwise, we have a fleet of our own bikes—tandems, 3-wheeled low riders, and 2-wheeled bikes. There are strict safety rules, including a rule that everyone on a bike (athletes, volunteers, and parents) MUST have on a properly-fitted helmet. All ability levels are accepted for cycling, but everyone must abide by the outlined rules. Safety is of utmost importance.
Skills that are addressed are donning and doffing helmet independently, endurance, mounting/dismounting, riding on appropriate side of the track, entering and exiting the course, passing, and some basic bicycle cleaning and maintenance. Because many cyclists use the team’s limited number of team bikes, some waiting may be involved, as well as some come and go timing of practices.
Usually, BBSO participates annually in an area competition in San Antonio or San Marcos. Cycling events are according to type of bicycle and distance. There have been a few years when athletes from our team have participated in the state event, as well. And sometimes we even have a “trail ride” through town with police escort! So fun!
