Boerne Blaze loves basketball! Our season starts shortly after Thanksgiving and goes until mid-February. Practices are at a Boerne ISD gym twice weekly for about 1 ½ hours. All athletes practice together but are grouped from “slow to fast” to work on skills at each person’s ability level.
Practices help develop endurance, specific basketball skills (dribbling, passing, shooting), game knowledge and skills, and sportsmanship. Once some of the basics are mastered, many practices include scrimmages to work on game skills.
Basketball athletes are expected to attend at least 50% of practices, participate in all components of the practice, work with various coaches and volunteers, and be a good sport with teammates.
Basketball is presently one BBSO sport in which we do not compete at the area level. Instead, we have the traditional “BIG GAME” in mid-February at the Boerne Champion High School gym. Our athletes are divided into two equal teams. High-school volunteers play alongside as unified partners. Each game quarter showcases a different ability level of athletes, so everyone has the opportunity to “strut their stuff” on the court. The game is free to the public, and they come out in impressive numbers! The event has a game announcer, referees, color guard, cheerleaders, dance teams, and band members. As one of our athletes said after the Big Game one year, “I feel like I’m on the San Antonio Spurs team!!”
