August 2024
July has been a fun month! We started swim team practices. As our number of athletes increases, we are outgrowing some of our facilities. Therefore, we are adding more practice days or trying to find creative ways to accommodate all ability levels and continue to have effective and meaningful practices. This year, we have lane swimmers practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays (as before), but have added an additional day (Wednesdays), just devoted to developmental swimmers.

A few of our athletes were invited to participate in a pilot aquathon on July 15! It was held in Austin at the School for the Deaf. This event was designed for distance swimmers and included a 400-meter swim and a half-mile run around the track. Taking 4 unified teams (4 athletes and 4 unified partners), we were the biggest delegation represented. The volunteers helping were from the Austin triathlon club and were awesome—encouraging, supportive, and so excited to see our athletes participating! They even donated a financial gift to our team account to help us make this a sanctioned sport with SOTX in the future! So fun. Thanks for representing the Boerne Blaze in a huge way - Adam, Kendall, Jeff, Rebecca, Eliana, Carley and CJ! One of the participants in the aquathon was a woman from Austin. Her name is Kayleigh and she has Down syndrome. She finished the New York marathon in 2023!!! Please see the inspiring pictures of her and her awesome shirt message!

​We also had the opportunity to represent Boerne Blaze at the annual Special Olympics fundraiser of Tip-a-Cop at the Leon Springs Texas Roadhouse restaurant. Boerne Police Dept. officers paired up with some of our BBSO athletes to go table to table to get the word out about Special Olympics and take financial donations. We really appreciate the partnership we are forging with Boerne PD! Thank you to all the athletes and supporters who came out for this event!​

​So, our 2024-2025 sports season has started with a bang! In August, we add cheer & dance practices and the new sport of pickleball! And don’t miss our 24-25 Kick-off at Enchanted Springs Ranch on August 17th!
